Following successful testing of the Ultrasonic Antifouling System, Ultra 20 Series II, for a sea chest on-board ‘Islander’ sailing in the same region, the installation of the new high powered ultrasonic system, ‘PowerPlus’, was implemented during her complete re-fit to five sea chests, filters, several sea water pipes and the thruster tunnel.
Sailing between Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands since her redeployment in September 2016, on-board engineers inspected the sea chests, filters and pipework for the first time during March 2017 and after seven months the results were fantastic. The Chief Engineer commented “I would say the performance is at least 80% better compared to the testing we carried out using the other system on Islander. The underwater inspection by divers of the sea chests showed these were clear of bio-fouling too”.
The images show the condition of pipes and filters, the last two images is a sea water pipe that wasn’t protected by ultrasonic due to its acoustic isolation from the connecting flange seals.
The following images show a pipe not applied with ultrasonic protection…the difference is clear to see!
Ultrasonic products used in this installation:
UltraSystem PowerPlus 24vdc – four transducer high output system.
Filter housing and seawater pipework transducer connections made using custom made radius brackets for effective and efficient sound transmission.
